Student Athlete Insight 2 - Laura Muir

Blog 4 - Laura Muir

Can you be an Olympian and also study a Veterinary Degree?? This Blog shows the dedication and commitment it takes for athlete and Glasgow University student Laura Muir to make it as an Olympic Athlete, British Champion and Double European Champion.

Competing at a world class level in sport is very demanding both physically and mentally but also very rewarding. It requires a lot of organisation, planning and motivation to ensure all the training, recovery, nutrition and many other aspects are completed to the best of your ability. Training varies day to day but generally it is an early start of about 6.30 am where I go for a run, I will be at university for 8am till around 6pm, train afterwards and also have Physio sessions 3 times a week. It requires a lot of time, I train 6 days a week including every Saturday and Sunday with many races throughout the year, often requiring a lot of travel. I do miss out on lots of social events but to be competing at the level I am in the sport I love, I wouldn't change a thing.

Laura and Alex ( from my previous blog ) have demonstrated that you can study at university and also be a top class athlete. However, they have illustrated that you have to put in 100%, make sacrifices and be fully committed to reach you potential. To make it you cannot just have an easy day, miss a day of training, or stay out late seeing friends. Everything has to come after your training schedule and competitions, as being an athlete is ultimately a lifestyle choice. Getting through the degree is the next part but everything else, such as your social life has to be sacrificed in order to be successful and make it as a top class athlete.
